Local legend has it that King John passed through Mirkmere where he spent a night with the local ladies in spectacular dissipation whilst the menfolk "liberated" some of his treasury. Once the loss was discovered it was assumed that the jewels had been lost in the Wash which had been crossed the next day with some difficulty and general inundation. This dance was composed in honour of the king.
